San Jose, Antique -- The Department of Interior and Local Government launched the Search for Outstanding Barangay Tanods in Western Visayas in recognition to their untiring commitment and spirit of volunteerism especially during emergencies, disasters and public disorder.
Along with non-government organizations, volunteer organizations/responders, the Barangay Tanods are prime contributors and major stakeholders in the implementation of government's peace and order programs and initiatives, said Rosario F. Maza, Provincial Director Department of Interior and Local Government.
The search according to DILG Antique will give incentives and awards to best performing individual and group Barangay Tanods in Western Visayas in the pursuit of the implementation and management of peace and order programs and initiatives.

Individual criteria includes trainings attended, length of service, number of cases reported or apprehended, projects initiated and exemplary act during emergencies, disasters and public disorders to save lives and properties.
Barangay Tanods serve their barangays on a purely voluntary basis, risking their life and limbs to preserve peace and order in their community with minimal or negligible financial benefits.
The Local Peace and Order Council (provincial, city and municipal levels) as implementing arm of the National Peace and Order Council and as front-liners in preparing for and responding to any type of atrocities, public disorders, emergencies, disasters and calamities that threaten peace and order and public safety has seen the crucial role of Barangay Tanods at the local level.
With this search the local peace and order council hopes to strengthen the volunteer system and auxiliary network between and among public and private responders, strengthen monitoring system and provide opportunity for the improvement of skills, knowledge and techniques in the pursuit of the preservation of peace and order and public safety.
