Calumpang-Calaparan drivers held one-day strike
Some 100 drivers plying the route of Calumpang- Calaparan yesterday (Thursday) held a one-day strike to show their strong opposition on the recent fare matrix approved by the Land Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
The drivers mostly are members of CRUDO led by Edwin Pedrajas. There are also several drivers who came from the Brotherhood Association under Boyet Parcon.
The two presidents of the associations were blinded of the drivers plans to hold an strike for one day. The strike had affected the commuters particularly the students.
As early as Wednesday afternoon, the protesting drivers sought the help Barangay Captain Lolita Maprangala in order to address their grievance. However, they were told by Maprangala that she can do nothing about their problem and only the city government and the LTFRB can decide on the matter.
The drivers complained of the long route that they have to traverse everyday. They have to pass by Arevalo area. The new route added additional gasoline consumption of the drivers. Drivers said their additional consumption of gas added from 17 liters to 20 liters.
While, their gas consumption adds up, the number of passengers they picked up lessened. There are passengers who rather would spend money to shorten their way in going and leaving their homes.
The drivers wanted the city government to intervene on their problem and they be allowed to pass again the Juntado Subdivision. The area is a private property.
The drivers also called for the help of the city government to fast track the construction of the Batiano bridge. They claimed the construction or rehabilitation of the bridge has yet to start. This will prolong their agony.,
The rerouting of Calumpang-Calaparan was effected to give way for the construction of the bridge. Commuters and drivers were caught flat-footed when the bridge was closed.
Thus, the rerouting prompted LTFRB Porferio Clavel to act. The distance was measured and new fare tariff was approved. The fare is fixed on P14.50.
