UNDP chooses Iloilo City as pilot area for study on threats of urbanization
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has chosen Iloilo City as pilot local government unit (LGU) for a study on how to mitigate the effects of disasters brought about by urbanization.
Iloilo City Executive Assistant Benito Jimena explained that disaster is not only limited to natural calamities but it can also be due to urbanization.
Urbanization might entail problems like increase in population, proliferation of fast foods and waste management.
A study dubbed "Mitigating the Effect of External Threats" (MEET) will look into the above-mentioned hazards and other concerns that would arise out of urbanization and try to find possible solutions.
If the strategy is successful, the action plan will be replicated in other urbanized areas in the country.
Jimena said they would assess the present condition and try to come up with better strategies.
A workshop that will be facilitated by the UNDP is slated August 23-25, where members identified to compose a team that would undertake the study will be given a briefing on how the research will be conducted.
The MEET program, which also falls under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), is working with eight urbanized cities in the country. However, UNDP decided to make Iloilo City as pilot LGU.
To recall, this city was also chosen as one of the pilot areas for the localization of the MDGs.
