Calinog is outstanding municipality in Nutrition Program
Calinog Mayor Alex Centena (center) receives plaque and

The Municipality of Calinog was awarded for the second time as an outstanding municipality in the implementation of the Nutrition Program in the Province of Iloilo during the Nutrition Month Culmination Program and Awarding Ceremony held August 2, 2006 at the capitol's conference hall.
The Municipality of New Lucena was awarded 1st Runner Up; Concepcion, 2nd Runner Up; Sta. Barbara, 3rd Runner Up; and Janiuay, 4th Runner Up.
Calinog received P10,000.00 cash award; New Lucena, P5,000.00; Concepcion, P3,000.00 and Sta. Barbara and Janiuay, P2,000.00 and P1,000.00, respectively. Each awardee also received plaques of appreciation.
In Barangay Category, Brgy. Bololacao, New Lucena was awarded as an outstanding barangay followed by Lanag, Sta. Barbara (1st Runner Up); Simsiman, Calinog; Camalongo, Calinog and Bitaog Gaja, New Lucena (2nd Runner Up); and Daga, Sta. Barbara.
Barangay Bololacao got P3,000.00; Lanag, P2,000.00 while Simsiman, Camalongo, Bitaog Gaja and Daga received P1,000.00 each.
This year, Estelita Masa of Brgy. Buyuan, Tigbauan was awarded as Outstanding Nutrition Scholar. She received P4,000.00 cash award and plaque.
Crispina Soterno of Brgy. Daga, Sta. Barbara was awarded 1st Runner Up and received P3,000.00 while Hannah Paredes of Brgy. Jamul-awon, Concepcion, 2nd Runner Up and Corazon G. Hontaria of Brgy. Salacay, Cabatuan, 3rd Runner Up and received P2,000.00 and P1,000.00, respectively.
On the other hand, Board Member Macario N. Napulan (Iloilo, 1st District), guest speaker of the affair urged mothers to provide their children proper nutrition by giving them foods rich in vitamins and minerals especially basic food groups -- go, grow, glow.
He also encouraged mothers to breastfeed their children until they reach the age of 2 years.
Napulan, doctor by profession, said teachers should encourage their pupils to eat nutritious foods and avoid junks.
Meanwhile, New Lucena Mayor June Mondejar expressed his delight to the award given to his municipality by the Provincial Nutrition Council.
He said the awards would serve as inspiration to them to exert more efforts to be more effective in their desire to solve the malnutrition problem among schoolchildren in New Lucena.
Mondejar is also optimistic to be the outstanding municipality in implementing nutrition program in the province of Iloilo.
Calinog Mayor Alex Centena, on the other hand, said their collective efforts to be an outstanding municipality in the implementation of nutrition program has again put them in the limelight this year not only in the province of Iloilo but also in the whole country.
A consistent number one in this initiative, Centena said his municipality has gained six national awards in Nutrition Program and he is trying to reach all 59 barangays of Calinog to eradicate malnutrition problem in his town.
Meanwhile, Gov. Niel D. Tupas, Sr. said his administration is also the advocate of proper nutrition especially among schoolchildren that is why he gives a big chunk of the budget for nutrition programs and projects in the province.
He said there are the Dairy Zone Project and the Milk Feeding Program, which aimed to give additional income to dairy farmers but also to solve the malnutrition problem among schoolchildren.
Rosarie T. San Luis, Provincial Nutrition Coordinator, said she is happy with the continuing support of LGUs of the Nutrition Program of the Province and other sponsors whose advocacy focuses on proper health and nutrition.
