Night market area now open to vehicular traffic
Councilor Jed Mabilog
No more night market.
No less than the proponent of the night market ordinance, City Councilor Jed Mabilog, has sponsored an amendment opening the night market area to vehicular traffic.
Councilor Jed Mabilog, chair of the committee on trade, commerce and industry sponsored an ordinance amending Section 3 of Regulation Ordinance No. 2005-178 also known as An Ordinance Amending Ordinance 415, series of 1993 otherwise known as an Ordinance Providing for a Night Market in the City of Iloilo.
The particular section states that the designated areas for the night market are closed to vehicular traffic from 6:00 pm until 12:00 am. It was also Mabilog who sponsored the amended version of the nigh market ordinance which created a setback among the street food vendors.
The number of readings for the approval of the particular section of the night market ordinance was suspended for its immediate implementation.
Mabilog's ordinance was in response to the petition filed by the Iloilo Shipping Operators and Allies Services Association (ISOA) to Mayor Jerry Treñas. Earlier, the group wanted the night market site to be transferred and not just opening the place for vehicular traffic.
The group said the current night market location that starts at the promenade caused "inconvenience and hindrance to the flow of traffic" to the flow of cargo traffic from the pier until the Quirino Bridge. The group said the area is closed to traffic when the cargo operations are normally done.
Since the implementation of the night market ordinance nothing has been heard about it specifically when the vendors were given the option whether to transfer at the night market area or stay in the site.
