RDC approves Green Philippine Highways program
The Regional Development Council (RDC), Region VI headed by Antique Governor Salvacion Z. Perez had recently issued Resolution No. 15, series of 2006 urging local government units, national government agencies and other sectors to support the implementation of the Green Philippine Highways Project of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The RDC Region VI Resolution states that the DENR Memorandum of Secretary Angelo T. Reyes dated June 5, 2006 is implementing the Green Philippine Highways with the purpose of improving the environmental condition of our national highway and will be adopting a strategy/scheme called "Adopt a Street and/or Grow a Tree for Legacy."
The endorsement and support made by the Regional Development Council is a big boost to the project that will be implemented on August 25, 2006 at 10:00 in the morning wherein a long human chain from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will be created to plant trees along the Pan Philippine Highways and the West Nautical Highway. The Pan Philippine Highways is existing for 27 years now and considered a major travel route from Laoag City thru La Union to Bulacan and the West Nautical Highway stretch from Batangas, Mindoro, Aklan, Negros Occidental to Sibugay, Zamboanga.
DENR Regional Executive Director Julian D. Amador is very enthusiastic about the support of the RDC-6 because this will strengthen the project's implementation. He said that the support of the regional council would give a high moral to the local government units to join in this great undertaking.
"This is very historic," says RED Amador. "It will be a good legacy of the participants to the tree planting especially those who could not go up the mountains to plant a tree there. This is one chance in a lifetime to be part of a gargantuan tree planting that can create an impact and a world record. I urge each and everyone especially the barangays and the students to be part of this one great legacy in history. You will never regret you are one of us," he ended.
Meanwhile, the support of the RDC 6 by passing the resolution is already a participation to this great endeavor. RED Amador would like to express his thanks to the whole RDC members and officers and to the media as well, for being a part of this great preparation. "This is also an invitation to the tri-media to cover this affair from Aklan to Negros Occidental. This is a big scoop and this will go down in the history of the Philippines," Amador said.
The Resolution No. 15 was approved on August 3, 2006 signed by Governor Salvacion Z. Perez, Chairperson and Hon. Wilfredo J. Homicillada, Co-Chairperson who are both ardent environmentalist.
