'Satisficed'
Oil spill in Guimaras, the biggest in Philippine history, is now eating a big area of the Nueva Valencia seas.
Solution must be urgent! Delay may cause ecological mortification in tragic proportions.

"Yes Politics--where greed wears the mask of morality," says Steve Martin in Pink Panther movie. What an accurate operational definition of the word for Malacañang.

Government debts went past the P4-trillion level in May even without additional borrowings, says the Bureau of Treasury.
Each Filipino now owes P47,000 to creditors based on a projected population of 85.3 million.

Names Inday and Juan are so plain yet they cause so much devastation here as a tropical storm. Almost a thousand families were displaced in Iloilo City alone.
We are in a state of calamity, indeed.

Congress is proposing to introduce English as a mandatory language for teaching in all school levels starting next year.
This is a brilliant proposal. But, are all public school teachers disposed, better yet capable, of this?

A number of economics teachers in Western Visayas (like University of St. La Salle – Bacolod, University of San Agustin, and Assumption Iloilo) have participated in a seminar-workshop on Teaching Basic Economics over the weekend at the AdI-SMCS Multipurpose Hall.
If not for Sinag-Tala Publishers, distributor of Dr. Bernardo Villegas' Guide to Economics book, and the Ateneo de Iloilo, this could not have been possible.

Romilo Balbeiran of the UA&P School of Economics managed to swathe the course in a most-mundane level. He started by defining economics as the "mathematics of happiness" and "happiness" as the "acquisition of goods... that lead to perfection which causes pleasure with a sense of purpose."
From this, he covered vast array of topics in economics such as David Ricardo's Comparative Advantage, Game Theory of John Nash, Adam Smith's economic paradigm, and the "bathtub economy," among others.
I hope the participating economics mentors were satisficed (an economist lingo that means being satisfied and sufficed) with his talk.

I got a chance also to chitchat with Sinag-Tala's managing director, Mr. Luis Uson. He said one of their most priced textbooks available now in the market is that text authored by Paul Dumol with Ernesto Grio: "A History of the Filipino People for High Schools." He said that, contrary to typical history books, this one is enriched by the insights of current research, filled with interesting photographs which relive the drama of the last century and a half indelibly inscribed in our culture.
Well, this is the kind of book that must be used by teenagers in schools. A history book that is allergic with memorization, but is focused more on the more essential whys and hows of the past.

I have heard that the Bank of Makati – Iloilo Branch now offers as much as 13% interest rate for time deposits and 4% interest rate for savings accounts. And the fact that it is presently the biggest and the wealthiest rural bank in the country right now with a total asset of P5.2 billion as of the end of June 2006, to invest in this bank is the smartest and safest thing to do! And you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.
For more inquiries, you may contact Bank of Makati - Iloilo manager Julie Ann Jaranilla at 335-8851 or visit her office at 41-1-1 John Tan building, Iznart Street, Iloilo City.

RDA chair Gov. Sally Perez is now so busy with the concerns of the region. Why not focus with her own province, Antique--one of the most depressed provinces in the country?

Nino dethrones Viloria to win WBC light flyweight crown.
He deserves it. Viloria simply gave it away. That's the price of fighting in the ring with no heart and with full of air in the head.
