Capiz mushroom spawn project takes off
Roxas City -- A mushroom spawn production project was inaugurated last September 15 at Barangay Bangonbangon in Sigma, Capiz as part of the government's program to promote agriculture and technology-based small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The inauguration capped the training on mushroom production organized for local farmers by Sigmahanon Development Foundation, Inc. (SDFI) with the support of Capiz State University, Department of Science and Technology and Sigma municipal government.
The SDFI is the main proponent of the project with the assistance of the DOST in cooperation with the municipal government and CAPSU and with the support of Capiz 2nd Congressional District Fredenil Castro and Sigma mayor Roberto Sualog.
Sualog acknowledged the role of SDFI in the project, adding that mushroom spawn production and mushroom growing would be a good opportunity for Sigmahanons especially to increase their income and eventually uplift their living conditions.
DOST provided the equipment for producing mushroom spawns under laboratory conditions while CAPSU shared the needed technology.
DOST Provincial Science and Technology Officer Lea Tabligan and Science Research Specialist II Gerbe Dellava were present during the inauguration.
CAPSU President Dr. Rochellir Dadivas exhorted the participants to value and sustain the project. He encouraged them to form a cooperative to make their project successful.
Also present were OIC vice mayor Gonzalo Joren and SDFI vice chair Antonio Bidiones.
The government has been pushing SMEs in the countryside as part of its sustaining effort to make an economic turnaround and drive for First World status in 20 years.
