Miag-ao landslide threatens, 'isolates' 5 barangays
Commuters to and from one barangay of the Municipality of Miag-ao, Province of Iloilo now have to contend with a lot of walking while motorists are barred entry in the area.
This, after a landslide occurred early Wednesday morning in Barangay Cauayanan and affected four other adjoining barangays.
Help was immediately sought by locals as responding authorities and residents checked for any victims. Fortunately, no one was hurt with village residents all accounted for. One house was totally damaged as neighbors helped to salvage the family's passenger jeepney and a tricycle dragged to the very edge of the cliff.
Mayor Gerardo Flores in a radio interview said yesterday (Thursday) that government workers and laborers continue to clear the area however it would still take days to complete the work. For now till the go-signal is given that the area is safe anew, walking remains the only option for hundreds of residents in the five villages.
Clearing efforts are hampered though with the intermittent rains and strong winds that caused smaller landslides and mudslides.
