Ten students of the College of Agriculture, Central Philippine University (CPU) conducted lectures on poultry and swine raising and silage production at Brgy. Cabano, San Lorenzo, Guimaras recently.
The activity was in line with the campaign against poverty wherein it aims to impart information to the farmers in order to help them on the problems besetting their swine and poultry.
Professor Jaime Cabarles of the CPU College of Agriculture said that the activity was one component of the students' academic curriculum for them to be expose to the nature of agricultural extension works and real field situation in the region.
"They should be trained to speak before the farmers in a farm situation like this for them to develop self confidence and apply the theories they have learned in the university," Prof. Cabarles explained.
Questions on sickness and diseases on poultry and swine as well as cultural management were properly answered by the team during the open forum.
The topics discussed were breeding management, feeds and nutrition, housing, and health care management.
Mr. Pablito Esmaya, the Farmer Leader Extensionist (FLE) in the area was thankful that such activity was held in the barangay. He said that farmers need such information in order to empower them and release them from the bondage of poverty.
"We need to encourage our farmers to engage in alternative livelihoods other than rice farming for them to have additional source of income," he said.
The students were Florence Fior, Charles Carumba, Larry Kwe, Jade Cocjin, Almond Angelo, Niel Estorillo, Patrick Canto, Pythias Tanate Jr., Samnel Lotilla and John Francis Gismia.
The activity was conducted alongside with the rice black bug information caravan by the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Division (RAFID) 6 of the Department of Agriculture.
