FVR, British Ambassador Beckingham to grace golf tourney
Former President Fidel V. Ramos and British Ambassador Peter Beckingham will grace the four-day Mayor Jerry Trenas- Dinagyang Golf tournament. The golf tournament will kick off on January 22, 2007 at the Sta. Barbara Gold Course.
Oscar Nava, chair of the golf tournament said Ramos and Ambassador Beckingham are among the long list of dignitaries who will attend the tournament. They are also expecting Manila Mayor Lito Atienza and other officials of the government.
The golf tournament is only one of the activities designed to give further color to the Dinagyang festival. There are other sports competitions which the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation and the city government have formulated.
Nava described the tournament as a major and international golfing event. He said they are expecting players from Australia, United States, Japan, Korea, Germany, New Zealand, Guam and also from Europe. Members of the Society of 1907, an oldest golf playing club formed in the United Kingdom. From local event, this become s an international event.
Currently, there are already 220 participants who have registered for the tournament. They are expecting some 600-800 participants. He said they want the golf tournament to start on January 22 as there is no other golf course in the city or province where the players can play. The Sta. Barbara Golf Course can only accommodate 150 players. After the tournament, there will be a grandiose awarding ceremony at the Nelly's Garden.
However, even if the golf tournament group have already planned for a grand tournament and celebration, Nava said they are looking for additional sponsors for the tournament.
