Canadian doctors conduct medical mission
Miag-ao, Iloilo – Some 410 patients from the 1st Congressional District were examined and treated for ears and eyes cases by 21 Canadian doctors in a surgical mission conducted last February 5th to 8th, this month at Rep. Pedro G. Trono Memorial Hospital in Guimbal town.
Mayor Gerardo Flores said the medical mission formed part of the week-long activity in celebration of the town’s 291st Founding Anniversary and Salakayan Festival 2007.
In a report submitted to the mayor, some 410 patients were qualified. Of the number, 129 were examined and 94 others were treated through surgeries on cataract, thyroidectory, pterygium and cyst among others. Also, 180 patients were given eyeglasses and seven (7) patients were installed with hearing aids. These patients came the seven towns - San Joaquin, Miagao, Guimbal, Igbaras, Tubungan, Tigbauan and Oton - of the 1st District.
The 21 Canadian doctors were assisted by nurses and volunteers. During the surgeries, they were divided into 2 groups. One was for ear examination headed by Dr. Dan Vargas and the other for eye examination by Doctors Hough Parsons, Anthony Townsend, Anderson and Ahmed.
The team also conducted lecture to ophthalmologist on Retinal Surgery at Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) in Mandurriao. Aside from the medical mission, the doctors also donated medical equipment and supplies to WVMC for use at the ophthalmology department.
“This was realized through Atty. Ted Britanico as his gesture of gratitude to us for choosing his daughter as Queen of Miagao in 2004,” Flores said. (Adora Bandorio-Mande)
