Treñas saddened by GO's security threat issue
Mayor Jerry Treñas
City Mayor Jerry Treñas would bring to the attention of his peers at the League of Cities in the Philippines (LCP), of which he is president, the fate incurred by Iloilo City when Genuine Opposition (GO) senatorial candidates were supposed to hold their grand rally.
Treñas said he will warn the other 117 city mayors in the country to take extra measures when GO candidates visit their city as they might also fall victim to cheap political gimmickry.
Treñas was saddened by the issue made by GO's rally organizers that their rally was canceled last Wednesday due to security threats.
Treñas surmised that the security threat issue was used after only a few people came over. “It is also impossible that they will do it in other cities,” Treñas said.
Iloilo City landed on the front pages of national dailies because of the alleged security threat at the grand rally of GO. This generated a bad implication on the economy and peace and order of the city. “We have been promoting the city and just because of politics, they have ruined the city. It is very unfair for me, for the people and the entire city,” Treñas stressed.
Treñas said he believes in the democratic process, the same reason why there is election every three years. The present administration is bound to present its accomplishments and the opposition will attack them. “They are all welcome to present their platforms of government but they should not make security threat as an excuse for their failure to gather support from the people.”
Treñas, who could not hide his disappointment over the claims of Provincial Administrator Manuel Mejorada about the alleged security threat, insisted that the city is peaceful.
