Doctors take the ramp for a cause
Iloilo's top pediatricians take off their usual doctor's white uniforms this weekend, March 17, 2007, to take center stage in a fund-raising gala event at the Amigo Terrace Hotel Coral Ballroom at 7 p.m.
Dubbed as "Seasons of Life... A Child's Memorable Journey thru Life," this rare happening chronicles the momentous events of a child from conception to parenthood, participated in by pediatricians, their family members and patients.
This exciting and laudable undertaking is spearheaded by the Philippine Pedriatric Society-Negros Occidental Western Visayas (PPS-NOWV) Chapter. This is part of its celebration of this year's theme: The Child and the Environment, which focuses on the growing global environmental crisis and health problems that affect humanity, especially young children.
In this regard, PPS-NOWV has been actively pursuing various projects. These include the conduct of modular training course for barangay health workers on common community health problems; the delivery of essential newborn package in adopted communities; and the on-going agro-forestry project in a 5-hectare land in the Maasin watershed in Brgy. Bagsakan, Alimodian Iloilo.
In January 2007, PPS-NOWC also initiated tree planting of mangroves in Sooc, Arevalo as a support activity to the rehabilitation of the Iloilo River. Mangroves act as nurseries for fishes, shrimps and crabs and are essential to the life of the river.
Spearheading the fund raising event are Doctors Cynthia Ybiernas (Over-all Chairperson and incoming Treasurer), James Woo (Ways and Means Head) and Donna Jordan (Concept and Casting Director). They are ably supported by incoming PPS-NOWV officers Teresita Geroche (President), Monica Nafarrete (Secretary) and John Colacion (PRO).
