Treñas asks private motorists to cooperate by taking alternate routes
City Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday appealed to private vehicle owners to take an alternative route to lessen the heavy traffic brought by the closure of a portion of Gen. Luna Street fronting the University of the Philippines Visayas in relation to the start of construction works for the P400 million Infante flyover.
Treñas's call came in the wake of the heavy traffic which greeted motorists yesterday when the flyover project started construction.
Treñas said, private vehicles coming from Molo can directly traverse Baluarte Molo road en route to Ledesma Street. Other motorists may also pass through the Diversion Road then the Iloilo Sports Complex in going to the City Proper.
The mayor said it could be a longer route for private motorists but it could greatly help in reducing the volume of vehicles passing the areas affected by the traffic rerouting.
In the traffic rerouting plan of the Traffic Management and Engineering Unit (TMEU), vehicles from, Villa, Oton, Mandurriao, Arevalo and Molo Baluarte (route which passes Gen. Luna) upon reaching Diversion Road must take a right turn to Infante Street, left to Delgado Street and left to Ybiernas Street then right to Gen. Luna Street.
Vehicles coming from the southern line like Tigbauan, Guimbal, Igbaras, Tubungan, Miag-ao and San Joaquin shall take the Molo Baluarte road in going to the Iloilo Terminal Market. Vehicles from central line will have the same route as that of the PUV's coming from Molo but has turn left to Jalandoni Street in going to General Luna.
Treñas asked the public to bear the inconvenience brought about by the construction of the Infante flyover saying the project has a long term benefit for the city. He said the flyover could help minimize the city's traffic problem.
The chief executive said he will meet with TMEU chief Senior Inspector Bob Foerster to discuss and assess the impact of the first day of the traffic rerouting.
Based on the time table the Infante flyover will be completed in ninety days.
Construction of another flyover in front of a mall in Diversion Road will follow once the Infante flyover is completed.
The two flyovers that will rise in Iloilo City are part of the Presidential Bridge Program.
