Marvin Ansino Segura, the current Central Philippine University Republic (CPUR) president was recognized as one of the awardees of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines program for Region 6 on March 18, 2007 at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.
Segura, a senior AB Political Science and Public Administration student, competed against 20 regional finalists coming from prominent private and state colleges and universities in Western Visayas. All regional finalists were prepared to be responsible professionals and community developers during the 3-day formation training-workshop held in Sipalay City from March 15 to 17. The regional interview was held in Balay Kalinungan inside USLS in order to determine the Ten Outstanding Students who will represent the region in the national level.
Segura made it to the Top 10 because of his numerous involvements in community-related activities as Charter President of the Rotaract Club of Jaro Centraline under the Rotary Club of Jaro Centraline District 3850 and Sangguniang Kabataan Chairperson of Barangay Poblacion Ilawod, Municipality of Sara. He served also as the Congress Director of the youth-oriented Iloilo Young Leaders Congress, which gathered 65 of the most promising high school student leaders all throughout the city and province of Iloilo. He was then recognized as one of the nation’s top 75 Ayala young leaders in 2006 and top 50 student leaders chosen and trained by the United States Embassy in the Democracy Summer Fest.
Another Centralian, Christopher Denusta of the College of Business and Accountancy was named also as one of the regional finalists. Dir. Rinand Escuban of CPU External and Student Affairs Office accompanied Segura and Denusta during the awarding ceremony.
Since 1961, the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) program has recognized outstanding youth of the nation for academic excellence, exemplary leadership, community involvement and good moral values. TOSP has undergone a transition from being just an awards program into a program that also focuses on community building. Its theme, "Learning, leading and serving for life", aims to promote excellence and service as a way of life through the TOSP awardees and finalists who come from the various regions of the Philippines. With this, a shared understanding and commitment towards our objective of building a better quality of life, anchored on good moral values and faith in God, and in the capacity of the Filipino to be an agent of change in his own community, is effectively and efficiently established.
