Media seminar for Religion, Values Ed teachers set
Noting the role of the mass media as a very potent agent of the youth's formation, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) -- Western Visayas and the University of San Agustin (USA) have scheduled a seminar-workshop on mass media literacy for religious instruction, evangelization and values formation on May 4-5 at the USA's President's Conference Room.
The seminar-workshop aims to revisit vital Church teachings on social communication/mass media, introduce participants to the mass media world, and craft strategies on how the mass media can be used effectively as an ally in teaching Religion/Theology or Values Education. Minimizing potential mass media ill effects and optimizing potential benefits will also be discussed.
The resource persons are Rev. Noel Judith, S.D.B, and USA Communication Arts lecturers Daniel Amular and Jigger Latoza. Judith holds an M.A. in Theology from the Don Bosco Center of Studies, an affiliate of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, which is famous for its social communication program. An English major, he is a licensed teacher and had been Principal of the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Victorias, Negros Occidental.
Amular holds a degree in Communication from the Ateneo de Manila University, and a master's degree in management from the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. He used to work for giant multinational advertising agencies like McCann Erikson before coming back to Iloilo to manage Amular Creative Photography and his Creative Shack Communications and Design.
On the other hand, Latoza holds a master's degree in Communication from the Ateneo de Manila University, a master's degree in public administration from the University of San Agustin, and leadership course from the Asian Institute of Management. He writes occasional commentaries in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and a regular column on socio-political issues in a regional daily. He used to be a deputy of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). As Director of the USA Center for Research and Publications, he serves as executive editor of six journals/bulletins, and focuses and mass media studies.
According to CEAP-VI, the course has been developed due to the researches suggesting that by the time most young people are 18 years old, they have spent more time in front of the television set than they have spent in school, and far more than they have spent talking with their teachers, their friends or even their parents. This vests the mass media with so much power in imparting knowledge, as well as values, to young people.
