CPP/NPA presence in 13 Janiuay barangays feared
Regional officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) here are out to decide if counting of the election returns in at least thirteen barangays in the town of Janiuay are up to potential danger.
This, as no less than Mayor Bienvenido Margarico formally sought the Commission's approval for transfer of venue on certain poll precincts in his town due to the reported infiltration of communist terrorists New People's Army (NPA).
In a report, The News Today (TNT) learned that Comelec Regional Director Renato Magbutay has already acted on the request. Assistant Regional Director Tomas Valera was sent in the area to validate the report as locals were called for a public hearing and consultation.
Valera, TNT gathered, is out to submit his findings and corresponding recommendation today while decision is assured on or before election day.
The thirteen villages identified by Mayor Margarico include Kuyot, Yabon, Ubian, Quipot, Canauilian, Barasalon, Atimonan, Anhawan, Panuran, Agcarope, Aglubong and Monte-Magapa.
Police Inspector Efren Niemba, Janiuay Police Chief issued a certification backing up the mayor's fears of NPA presence and infiltration in said barangays.
Mayor Margarico in his request noted the danger that awaits election officers once the voting ends and counting begins. With the manual counting of the election returns expected to continue the rest of the evening after election day, Mayor Margarico said it would further place the entire practice in jeopardy and the safety and security of all present in imminent danger.
The mayor's critics were quick to express pessimism on the request though saying transferring the election returns will be an opportunity for ballot switching or even ballot snatching.
