10 new OWWA scholars named
Ten deserving children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Western Visayas are among the new batch of scholars of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
OWWA 6 Officer-in-Charge James Mendiola said of the 10 scholars, 7 qualified to their Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) while the three others to their Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP). All the scholars are incoming first year college students this coming school year.
The scholarship grants are part of the continued efforts of the OWWA and the government to look after the welfare and condition of the OFWs and provide them with support in recognition of their valuable contribution to the country's economy.
Among those who qualified in the EDSP are the following: Ralph Luke Bello of St. Luke's Academy in Antique, Jessica Amelia Lorenzo of UPV High School, Iloilo City, Ailene Sorcoso of Philippine Science High School, Western Visayas campus, Arthur Jay Cordero of University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City, Kennieth John Solas of SPED, Iloilo City, Johnnil Fatima Acero of Negros Occidental High School in Negros Occidental, Marian Lilac Penafiel of Colegio de la Immaculada, Pototan, Iloilo.
The new scholars for CMWSP are the following: Marife Novilla of Regional Science High School for Region 6 in Kalibo, Aklan; Jose Alfred Rubinos of Dao Catholic School in Dao, Capiz; and Soledad Lumogdang of Dona Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.
Under the EDSP, scholars will receive a financial assistance amounting to P30,000 per semester and they are free to choose any 4-5 year course at any CHED accredited college or university.
In the CMWSP, scholars can enroll in any Science and Technology courses at any state college/university or private school with duly approved complete curricular offerings in Science and Technology recognized by DECS or CHED. The grant includes tuition fee and other school fees not to exceed P10,000 per semester, monthly stipend of P3,500, book allowance of P1,000, clothing allowance of P500, GSIS group insurance and actual fare from the scholar's residence to place of study.
