Barangay officials urged to avail of scholarship program
San Jose, Antique -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo urged barangay officials to become computer literate via government educational programs so that they could become competitive when searching for jobs even if they are already in their senior years.
The President encouraged the barangay officials to let their children try the government's new ladderized education program under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) so that they could immediately use their new-found skills for practical livelihood, and even have their TESDA units later credited in the pursuit of college courses.
In Antique, the Department of Interior and Local Government issued certification for barangay officials who wish to avail of government's scholarship programs. "Barangay Officials have come to our office to secure certification for their children, who wish to enroll in state colleges and universities," said Rosario F. Maza DILG Provincial Director.
A big number of children of barangay officials in the province have availed of free tuition fee, some have even graduated in college and are now employed. Scholarship for children of barangay officials is a big help for their families to graduate from poverty especially those who have finished their studies, said Maza
Meanwhile, President Arroyo said that TESDA's short term courses can be used as foundation subjects in college courses. She emphasized the need to match the education and skills of workers with the jobs that they apply for here and abroad.
DILG also urged barangay officials to upgrade their computer skills to match with the demands of the information technology.
