SET-UP project generates P140M profit for SMEs
CEBU CITY -- Some P140 million income were generated by micro, small and medium scale enterprises after they have availed of the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Data from the DOST 6 showed that they have assisted 100 existing firms and three new firms. They were also able to provide 144 technology inventions to these firms. Through these technological inventions, 3,158 employments were recorded.
The region's accomplishment on the SET-UP project will be discussed by DOST Regional Director Rowen Gelonga in today's launching of the High Impact Program on Tropical Wines and Distilled Spirits here.
Three regional directors, provincial directors and key officials of the department the Visayas cluster are here in Cebu. Each region will also be assessed of their performance in all its assisted project under the DOST-SET-UP. They will determine what they have achieved and what more can they offer to micro, small and medium enterprise.
The three-day activity is held at the Crown Regency Hotel, Guadalupe, Cebu. DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro will grace the occasion. The same gathering will also feature product exhibits from micro, small and medium enterprise who have availed the department's program.
The DOST's SET-UP project centers primarily on the regional priority sectors which include furniture, food processing, natural fibers, gifts and holiday decors (GHD) and fashion accessories.
These sectors were identified considering their impact on the local economy, availability of resources, potential both in local and export markets. Currently, these regional priority sectors are also given emphasis by local government units as money making business.
It was learned that 2006 was another banner year for the DOST 6 after it has delivered various Science and Technology interventions for the enhancement of the quality of life in the region. The department had been aggressively implementing various program components and other activities under SET-UP since 2004.
