DepEd to establish 35 more library hubs this year
The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that 35 more Library Hubs will be established in various parts of the country to provide students more access to reading and reference materials.
DepEd Undersecretary Teodosio Sangil, who witnessed the inauguration of the library hub established by Petron Corporation in Guimaras Wednesday, said the plan was to establish 35 wholesale libraries in the country this 2007.
The first hub that was constructed for this year is in Guimaras. It houses 36,000 books donated by Saudi Aramco, Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation, Petron Dealers Association, San Francisco Library (USA) and Bato Balani Foundation.
Sangil said DepEd only counterpart is to provide trainings to the teachers on how to access the available materials.
"This is the first time that a private corporation has donated almost everything," he said.
However, Sangil said Petron is not the only one that is willing to support the government in uplifting the standards of education in the country.
He said there have been offers from a lot of interested donors under the Adopt-A-School program of the DepEd.
Meantime, Sangil confirmed that they will soon be constructing additional library hubs in Western Visayas in addition to that in Guimaras.
The two additional hubs will be established in the province and city of Iloilo, he said.
At present, the library hubs in the cities of Bacolod, Sagay and Silay in Negros Occidental are already operational.
