Bacolod city mayor vying to replace Treñas as LCP prexy
Bacolod City Mayor Evelio "Bing" Leonardia is one of the three contenders for the presidency of the League of the Cities in the Philippines (LCP).
The other two contenders for the position are mayors Mel Sarmiento of Calbayog City and Benhur Abalos of Mandaluyong.
LCP is presently headed by City Mayor Jerry Treñas.
Treñas said Leonardia, Sarmiento and Abalos are among the mayors in the country being groomed to be the next president of the league. The league will meet today for their 31st National Executive Board Meeting to discuss the fate of the three contenders and other pressing issues about the league.
Treñas said decided not to submit himself for a reelection though he can still run as the league's president.
He said, he wants to concentrate on the big projects of the city particularly on the construction of the multi-million city hall building, roads and other projects.
The schedule of the LCP national convention and election of officers for 2007-2010 will be known after today's board meeting.
Among the issues to be discussed in today's board meeting are the orientation for first-term city mayors, updates on cityhood issue, the petition before the Supreme Court and other policy issues from policy department; Integrated Urban Water Resource Management and other issues confronting the league.
