Miagao is cleanest and greenest municipality
The Municipality of Miagao has been adjudged 1st place for the cleanest and greenest Municipality in Category "A" during the 2006 Project Cleaning and Greening evaluation of the province of Iloilo.
The 1st place trophy and P30,000 cash prize incentive were received by General Services Office chief and Clean Committee chairman Arlene Nufuar in an awarding ceremony held on June 20th, 2007 at the 5/F Conference Room inside Iloilo Provincial Capitol building.
Marylou Sumbing, Information Officer III and Action Office of Task Force Cleaning and Greening, said the cash incentive and 1st place trophy were expressions of gratitude of the provincial government to the LGU's identified for their support to the program.
"The program was also the province' unending effort of providing a healthy environment to its populace," Sumbing said.
Come second is the Municipality of San Joaquin. Other winners are municipalities of Janiuay (3rd place), Lambunao (4th place) and Sta. Barbara 5th place).
For Miagao, Nufuar said the LGU has religiously followed the guidelines set forth by DILG Region VI in so far as the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran search is concerned.
The participants in the search were adjudged based on the following criteria; physical conditions and built-up areas which include: the absence of eyesores (illegal structures, unsightly posters and streamers, abandoned junks, idle land); well maintained facilities (public markets, food terminals, slaughterhouse, public toilets, health and day care centers, and sanitary landfill); and presence of health and environment friendly practices (waste segregation at source, effective and efficient garbage collection and disposal, clean and properly maintained drainage system, designation of smoking areas in public and private offices, absence of rabies cases, absence of epidemics, sufficient safe water supply to household) and support system.
Meanwhile, outgoing Mayor Gerardo N. Flores was proud of the award and was confident that it shall be continued by his wife, incoming Mayor Julieta N. Flores. It was during the administration of Mayor Julieta that the clean and green program was first launched.
