Treñas endorses plan to put up coal-fired power plant
City Mayor Jerry Treñas has reiterated his endorsement of plans to put up coal-fired power plants either in the city or province of Iloilo.
Treñas said there is a need for additional power source to address the unstable power supply in the city and province.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently granted Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) to the DM Consunji Inc. (DMCI) to put up a 100 MW circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power plant in Barangay Nipa, Concepcion.
Treñas said the proposed coal-fired power plant in Concepcion, if realized, could not only benefit the said town but also the city of Iloilo.
Treñas, who just came back from Germany, observed that several coal-fired power plants are operating in said country.
He said even Cebu is looking forward to having a coal-fired power plant aside from the present geothermal plant that they have as their power source.
"Developing cities like Iloilo City need stable power supply," said Treñas.
The chief executive added that the environmental groups who are strongly opposing the operation of a coal-fired power plant should open their minds and consider the positive aspects and not only the negative effects of the proposed coal-fired power plants.
