Regulation of carnivals, kiosks in Molo plaza urged
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) of Molo has asked the intervention of the city government on the expected proliferation of commercial kiosks and carnivals inside and outside of the Molo plaza relative to its upcoming district fiesta on July 26.
PPC recently passed a resolution requesting the Sangguniang Panlungsod to regulate and control the putting up of fiesta carnival, stalls, kiosks and other selling activities at the Molo plaza.
The resolution was approved by the PPC last June 26, 2007. A copy of the same resolution was only received by Mayor Jerry Treñas's office last Tuesday, a few days after the kiosk owners have started occupying the entire plaza.
The resolution was addressed to then Vice Mayor Guillermo de la Llana and three other councilors who hail from Molo district--Jed Patrick Mabilog, Perla Zulueta and Jeffrey Ganzon. Dela Llana ended his term of office last June 30 while Mabilog is now the vice mayor.
The PPC through its president Rustico Ledesma said there is an urgent need for the city council to act on their request as the Molo patronal fiesta is fast approaching.
"People from all walks of life will visit the town (district)," the resolution stressed.
Molo district celebrates its patronal fiesta every July 26, in honor of its patron saint, St. Anne. For Roman Catholic faithfuls, St. Anne is the mother is the Blessed Virgin. The same feast also honors St. Anne's husband, St. Joachim.
The PPC resolution stated that Molo plaza has long been acclaimed and lauded as a historical landmark for tourism. "The beautiful perspective of the church facade and structure is impeded with the putting up of carnival, different kiosks, stalls and other related store-selling activities," part of the resolution reads.
Different kinds of kiosks and carnival rides and games have started occupying Molo plaza last July 1.
The carnival rides and the placement of kiosks is managed by the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) of Molo district. It was learned that part of the proceeds in said activities go to the ABC.
