Million peso law and hungry Filipinos
Believe it or not, the last Philippine Congress spent PhP148 million for every law passed! The 13th Congress had a budget of PhP12.5 billion during its three-year term. One law passed costing PhP148 million is more than enough to feed 40,00 hungry and malnourished Filipinos like the poor Payatas residents and the diminishing Aeta population including the Badyaos in Mindanao. The three-year term budget of Congress amounting to PhP12.5 billion is sufficient enough to construct 100,000 school houses and purchase 20 million textbooks for bookless students in cities, barangays and far-flung sitios in the countryside. Thousands of students in remote barangays and sitios reportedly share one textbooks with fellow 5 to 7 students.
What is the use of thousands of laws passed by Congress since 1946 when hundreds of indigent Filipinos die of malnutrition and lack of food? There are enough laws to answer the crime situation in the country, but why are there frequent kidnapping, rape, killing, hold-ups, thieveries, and graft and corruption. Laws are very vital to the security and welfare of the citizens. But why appropriate millions of pesos just to add hundreds of laws to the already cobweb documents in the Library of the Congress?
Congress really is a gold mine place as many candidates for the public office kill one another just to get elected for they know that there are gold bullions there. The fighting congressman of Nueva Vizcaya said that there were 81 committees in the last congress and every time there is a committee meeting, about PhP5 million to PhP10 million were spent for the meeting. Again, this gargantuan amount can go to medicines of the sick Filipinos many of whom died because of lack of money and expensive hospitalization fees.
Why did our people choose representatives to Congress? To help ameliorate the poor living condition of the people and not to enrich lawmakers. Why are many poor congressmen become rich when they are elected to Congress? Many have big palatial homes, half a dozen cars and condominiums and hidden women in expensive rented homes. What if you accumulate billions of pesos or even dollars in your 9-year term in Congress. Will the "blood money" get you to heaven? Matthew 16:26, "For what profit is it to man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"
When a politician dies and go straight to God, there will be accounting of what man has done during his life here on earth. For the righteous and honest Congressmen, the Filipinos salute you. Your reward is waiting for you in heaven. What legacy will our crooked politicians leave to their constituents and family? Stolen money and other dirty means of making a living? Will the honest politicians inherit God's kingdom when his life on earth is finished? Think of these things.
