Use of plaza for fiesta fairs to be banned soon?
City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is willing to give money to the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) of various districts in the city in order for them not to use the public plazas for the holding of carnivals and kiosks during fiesta celebrations.
This was revealed by City Tourism Office chief Ben Jimena during the launching of the "Pretty Plaza, Banwa Gwapa" contest last Tuesday.
The contest is a joint effort of the city government and the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) to promote the beautification of public plazas.
Jimena said the mayor expressed willingness to pay the city's various ABCs in order to free the plazas from destruction every time there is a fiesta celebration.
To note, Mayor Treñas himself gives clearances for the ABC to hold commercial activities and carnivals in the plaza.
Jimena said there is now plans to ban the holding of such activities in the plazas. There is a suggestion that the holding of fair and other related business activities will be made in open places other than the plaza. This will be discussed among the presidents of the various ABCs.
Jimena noted that the city government through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) maintains the plaza but is only destroyed by the holding of rides, videoke spots and selling of various items.
