My ten 'must recommend' movies
Movies always perk up any conversation because almost every person in the world has watched at least one movie at some point in their lives. However, there are movies that are really great conversation pieces -- unless of course those who are party to the conversation haven't watched the film yet. The movies of the pop era are really great to watch because of the computer generated effects and whatever else eye candy there is. Unfortunately, the pop movies don't quite pass off as well written in the story department. This week, I will share with you ten films that are perfect topics of conversation simply because those who made the movies did not underestimate the intelligence of the moviegoer; hence, after you watch these movies, you can talk to your friends about them and find that you've actually been talking for hours on end already. So, I do hope you find these ten movies -- for your own pleasure and consumption.
-
Chasing Amy -- this movie is cleverly set in the apartment of two guys, one is straight, and the other is gay. Amy, the best girl friend of both guys comes over to help settle a conflict between the roommates. Soon, the straight guy reveals he had fallen in love with Amy, and guess what the gay guy reveals? The movie is a dialogue movie, but the script was so well written that you feel like you are just eavesdropping into the lives of these three people.
-
Escape from Sorbibor -- this film is a heavy drama about the experiences of war prisoners in Vietnam. It's about the abuses on the natives. A warning though, this movie can be very graphic and very, very, disturbing, but it is filled with interesting facts about the Vietnam war, and with images that can turn your stomach inside out -- without the gore; now go figure.
-
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest -- set inside a nut house or an asylum, this movie shows that sometimes, the senseless can actually be sensible. I was impressed by the disjointed dialogue in this film; dialogue that seemed to come out from nowhere, and did not seem to make any sense at all, only converging in the end and giving you that wonderful moment of epiphany.
-
The Last Emperor -- this one is an era/historical film about the life of Emperor Pu Yi of the Forbidden/Walled City of China. This is a wonderful film for those who love culture because it is truly authentic; complete with the minutest detail. The attention to detail in this film is so intense that I almost feel I am actually in the movie. The cinematography is perfect!
-
To Wong Fu With Love -- Julie Neumar - have you ever seen Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo, and Wesley Snipes in a gown, complete with make-up and freakishly gay language? Well, in this film, you will -- they all play drag queens here traveling to Las Vegas to join a drag queen contest.
-
The Cure -- the striking quality of this film is its simplicity and humility in presentation. There is nothing monumental about the film, but it's that simplicity that is shown in the lives of two young boys that grabs your attention. The plot is very simple -- you have two childhood friends, and the younger one is diagnosed with HIV acquired from a blood transfusion. The older boy is an orphan, and well, I promise you, you will have puffy eyes after watching this film.
-
Birdy -- simply put, this one wrenches your heart out. This is about two brothers; the younger one is mentally retarded, and wants to experience how it is to fly. The elder brother, because he loves his brother so much, tries to find a way to give his brother that experience. Again, you have a very simple film, with simple dialogue, but with a plot that can actually go beyond the boundaries of human emotion.
-
Lorenzo's Oil -- here you have one of the sterling performances of Susan Sarandon. The movie is about a couple grappling with the complications of living with an epileptic only child. It revolves around the couple's quest to find a cure for their boy.
-
Moonstruck -- this one is a really fun film adapted from the fairy tale, 'The Frog Prince'. It stars Cher, and simply put, it's a really clever way of making some childhood story into an adult fairy tale.
-
Breakfast at Tiffany's -- this is the forerunner of the very popular 'Pretty Woman'. Need I say more?
There you are folks, try to find these movies and I promise you, you will not regret watching them.
Be rational; be insane...every once in a while!! TTFN!
I Love you all! Byers!
