Country needs technological revolution, says DOST exec
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary for Regional Operations Maripaz Perez said the country needs to prepare for a technological revolution.
Perez, who was yesterday's guest in the opening ceremony of the National Science Week 2007 said the government should strengthen the entrepreneurial development through Small and Medium Enterprise.
Perez said Small and Medium Enterprise players have very good ideas and products but they need intervention through technological support.
Perez said it is critical for the government, legislative body as well as private sectors to have a common priority and envision reality to become a globally competitive nation.
Meanwhile, Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr. urged the department to embark on programs that centers on fuel and energy. He said the department should go into important projects that has high impact on the people. The department should further focus on areas with immediate impact and very relevant to the people.
Gonzalez said the DOST, Department of Agriculture and Department of Trade and Industry should come up with a pilot project that centers on the use of "bio-digester" for cooking oil and same time fuel.
The law on the use of bio-ethanol is already approved and yet not all of the people use bio-ethanol, said Gonzalez.
The methane generated from recycled materials are abundant and not utilized. He cited that there is a hotel in Manhattan that used methane for its electricity. The methane came from the waste products of the hotel. The use of cooking oil as fuel will lessen the cutting down of trees for firewood and create cleaner and greener environment.
The solon said the DOST should not be afraid of making tie ups with private sector to institute such discovery. The academicians should disseminate whatever they got from their studies to the rest of the society, Gonzalez said.
