Election of RDC private sector reps set
The Regional Development Council (RDC) of Region VI will be reorganized following the successful conduct of the congressional and local elections last May 2007. The RDC is reorganized every three years. As part of its reorganization, the private sector representatives will also elect from among themselves 16 individuals who will compose the 25 percent of the RDC. The election will be conducted on August 6, 2007 at the Jalaur Room of the NEDA Regional Office VI, Iloilo City.
The present RDC was reorganized through Executive Order 325 issued by Pres. Fidel V. Ramos in 1996 primarily for purposes of administrative decentralization to strengthen the autonomy of the local government units and to accelerate the socio-economic development of the regions. Article X, Section 14 of the Constitution provides that the President shall create RDCs and other similar bodies composed of local government officials, regional heads of departments and other government offices and representatives from non-government organizations within the regions.
Based on EO 325, the private sector representatives shall comprise one-fourth of the members of the fully-constituted council.
So far, 24 non-government organizations have already sent their nominees to this election. Only 16 representatives will be selected from different private sectors in the region and will serve a term of three years.
