City mulls separate shelter for abused girls
A separate shelter for abused girls is being mulled by the city government here as the city finalizes its children's code and vies for the most friendly city for kids award.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the proposed area will be the city-owned ABC Hall at Duran Street here which has been unoccupied for a long time.
Representatives of the Japanese Embassy will be coming to the city next week to see the building and possibly to give financial assistance to enhance the building.
Treñas said there is an urgent need for a place for young abandoned girls and the proposed shelter for girls in conflict with law (CIC) comes after the city also provided a half-way shelter for boys in conflict with law.
The boys' shelter called Dalayunan is located at Bo. Obrero district here and implemented by the Iloilo Juvenile Welfare Foundation.
The shelter currently houses 32 young boys who are being trained in some short term vocational courses.
The girls' shelter will house victims of parental abuse, neglect, rape and prostitution, who were rescued by the IJWF, Task Force Adams Apple and the Department of Social welfare and Development (DSWD).
Some of them were later placed under the custody of DSWD.
