6,188 drivers apprehended in August
Some 6,188 drivers had been apprehended for various offenses by metro traffic enforcers for the month of August this year, the traffic management and engineering unit of the City Mayor's Office reported recently.
In a monthly report submitted to Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, drivers licenses-in-charge Carlos Thompson, Jr. said the apprehensions also made the city coffers richer by P482, 220.00 in fines and penalties which the erring drivers paid.
Thompson, Jr. said the biggest number of arrests occurred in August 28th with 489 apprehended while the highest collection happened in August 21st with P40,050.00 amassed in fines.
The number of apprehensions rose dramatically over the past year after Treñas adopted measures to resolve the city's traffic problem. "Aside from the city's efforts at mitigating the traffic concerns, I urge Ilonggo motorists to obey traffic rules and practice road courtesy at all times to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles in major thoroughfares," Treñas said.
Meanwhile, the latest project that is expected to significantly ease congestion along Gen. Luna Street is the flyover that is slated to be open to commuters by next month. Another flyover along Diversion Road near SM City is scheduled to be built before the year ends.
