Number of non-reader pupils in Iloilo City drops
The number of non-reader pupils in Iloilo City has significantly dropped, according to the Division of Iloilo City Schools here.
For school year 2006-2007, only 1.94 percent of the more or less 41,000 pupils from the city's 51 elementary schools are non-readers compared with the 2.4 percent non-readers for school year 2005-2006 with almost the same number of enrollees.
The result was based on the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory, according to Ma. Luz de los Reyes, Education Supervisor I in English of the Division Office.
Non-readers are those pupils who categorically could not understand or could hardly recognize words in the English language, or those pupils accelerated to the next grade level but the reading comprehension ability is equivalent to pupils at the lower grade levels, she explained.
She said a pre-test is conducted before the start of the school year followed by a post test as the calendar year is about to end. The assessment is done on a one-on-one basis to really determine the reading capacity of the pupils.
De los Reyes, meantime, attributed the success of the advocacy to the aggressive drive of the city government to increase the standard of education in the city. (PNA)
