BRGY & SK POLLS UPDATE
City Comelec readies certified voters' list
It's business as usual for the City Commission on Elections (Comelec) despite the sudden resignation of Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. and the possibility that the Senate will go with the position of the House of Representatives to have the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections postponed.
City Comelec has started accepting certificates of candidacy and is already preparing the certified list of voters.
Election Officer 2 Jonathan Sayno said the city has 247,532 regular registered voters and 12,173 voters for the SK. There are also 1,269 precincts for the regular registered voters and some 180 precincts for the SK.
The precincts for the SK will depend on the registered voters in each barangay. As a rule, there should be one precinct for each barangay where the youth aging 15-18 could cast their votes.
Sayno said after they are done with the certified list of voters, the commission will focus on the certified list of candidates after the filing period ends on October 18, 2007. Initially, there are four candidates for punong barangay, nine for barangay kagawad, two for SK president and 14 for SK kagawad who have filed their certificates of candidacy.
The election campaign period shall begin on October 19, 2007 and ends on October 27, 2007. The election will be on October 29, 2007 as programmed by the Comelec.
The gun ban already took effect last September 14, 2007 until November 13, 2007. It was learned that the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has yet to furnish the Comelec a copy of the report regarding the implementation of the gun ban.
