Polls or no polls, Liga exec wants to end 'unifinished business'
Board Member Angelo Briones, Liga President of the Liga ng mga Barangay in Iloilo Province has set its eyes on finishing a number of "unfinished business" be it polls or no polls.
With about 20% of certificates of candidacies (COCs) filed in Iloilo's 1,721 barangays, Briones said it is practically a go for those wanting to run. Similarly too, to those who are out to exit and move on post-Liga life.
Final say however hangs as deliberations continue in the Senate.
Briones himself is a graduating official of the Liga.
"We want to finish construction of our Liga building. Thus far we have spent P2 million for it. We also want to strengthen our advocacy on administrative capability, our study on taxation and the campaign for the establishment of barangay-based emergency response management teams," Briones said in a The News Today (TNT) interview.
The Liga has since been in the forefront of the 'I Love Red Cross 1-4-3" program that pushes to train and equip barangay officials on management of emergency cases and situations.
Iloilo province has its share of graduating barangay officials placed at about 60%. Briones said what delays the candidates in filing their COCs is the high cost of drug-testing, a requirement for all wanting to be in public office.
Proposals pending before the Senate have the holding of the synchrohized elections of the Liga and the Sangguniang Kabataan on May 2008 instead of October 29 this year. If the Lower House is to be followed, sentiments here was to have it October of 2009.
