Council wants to limit use of Boracay's name
BORACAY – The Sangguniang Bayan of Malay, Aklan is currently crafting an ordinance hoping to restrict the use of the name Boracay for advertising and business purposes without seeking first the necessary permit from the local government unit.
Malay Vice Mayor John Yap said they have observed many advertisements in the print and television media, and even radio using the name Boracay for their own "business and private interests."
The ordinance is meant to generate more funds for this resort island. But it remains unclear how the local government will enforce it.
"We hope that businesses and public event organizers would listen to our plea," said Yap.
In 2000, Yap while still a councilor also passed an ordinance regulating the conduct of movies and television shoots in this resort island.
According to the Department of Tourism, this resort island is continuously being visited by both foreign and local tourists, being a premier tourism destination. www.aklanon.org
