WVCST offers computer literacy training for the hearing impaired
The Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) Computer Department and the SPED – Integrated School for the Exceptional Children created the Computer Literacy Program Extension Project for the latter. Its aim is to educate the hearing impaired in using the computer as the basic tool that will enhance their full potential to cope in the advancement of society. This way, they will become competitive in the field of ICT.
The training includes basic computer skills like MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint and the Internet for 120 hours.
Eighty hearing impaired students joined in this program that was held from July 23 to Oct. 3, 2007.
The instructors from the computer department who handled the training were Susan Ann Masculino, Lenny Hubero, Randy Tolentino, Jubert Balmes, Christine Jamela Valsado, Romarie Jhoanna Chu, Jenilyn Hubero, Krishna Guartero, and Jo Ann Apresto, Giovanni Cagalaban, Chrizette Jimenez from WVCST. The SPED-ISEC interpreters were Carol Sobredilla, Godiva Doromal, Rolyn Hautea, Renelita Sayno, Albert Bilan, Jr., Riza Celestial, Elsa Solas, Jose Gellang and Elizabeth Orquiola , principal of SPED-ISEC.
The culminating activity was held last October 3 at the Division Hall. It was attended by Imelda Gamba – OIC Principal, SPED-ISEC; Dr. Marjorie Caipang, VP for Academic Affairs, WVCST; Dr. Emma Q. Quidato, dean, CAS of WVCST; Dr. Nemia Mabaquiao, director, Extension Services Division, WVCST; Andres Ortega, Jr., Extension Service coordinator, WVCST; Maureen Nettie Navarrosa, Computer Department head; and faculty members of both schools.
The WVCST is a government educational institution that considers itself a pioneer in promoting this humanitarian endeavor to the hearing impaired.
