DepEd, Comelec sign MOA for 2007 barangay and SK elections
The Department of Education (DepEd), together with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), will sign a Memorandum of Agreement this afternoon at 2pm at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan, DepEd Complex – as part of its efforts to collaborate with other government agencies for a smooth conduct of the elections.
Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Franklin Sunga and Undersecretary for Operations Ramon Bacani will represent DepEd, and Acting Chairman Resurreccion Borra will represent COMELEC during the MOA signing.
"Our topmost priority at the Department of Education is the safety and well-being of our teachers," Undersecretary Sunga said.
DepEd is mainly in charge of providing the manpower that will carry out the tasks and responsibilities attendant to the conduct of elections. It is also in charge of responding to the various concerns of teachers manning the poll precincts. COMELEC, on the other hand, is responsible for enforcing and administering all election laws and regulations.
"Teachers will again play a critical role in elections," Undersecretary Bacani said. "We therefore recognize the need to provide them with the capability to perform their electoral duties well," he added.
This is in preparation for the Synchronized Barangay and SK Elections which will be held on October 29, 2007.
