Drive to use recyclable materials on
Massive advocacy and nationwide campaign to promote the use of recyclable and indigenous materials would kick-off next month, said Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose Atienza.
Secretary Atienza said during the "The Cabinet Speaks" television program, that "the DENR is now pushing to promote the use of indigenous materials, like paper bags and "bayong", in all shopping malls, groceries, restaurants, among others.
The DENR Secretary said that the campaign is part of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's directive to him to promote and protect the environment from the negative impact of global warming.
He said that after the launching, the DENR will coordinate with the city and municipal councils nationwide to determine the sanctions and penalties to be imposed on violators.
With proper information and education, the DENR believes that the public or the shoppers are expected to be using "bayong" and paper bags instead of plastic bags and styropor.
The DENR VI when contacted for comment, said that they will just wait for the directives from their central office. (PIA 6/T.Villavert)
