PSHS stude wins 2007 Popcom essay writing contest
A third year high school student from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Iloilo campus bagged the first place in the On-the-Spot Essay writing contest sponsored by the Population Commission (Popcom) held last November 9, 2007 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
Third year high school Janvin Jessel Carissa of the PSHS Iloilo Campus bested other 42 contestants from both public and private high schools in the city and province of Iloilo. Carissa received P5,000 cash and trophy.
Jane Tristeza of Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus, on the other hand, won second place in which she received P3,000 and trophy. Febrielyn Tumines of Oton National High School was third place. Tumines also received a cash prize of P2,000 and a trophy. The on-the-spot essay writing contest has a theme "Population, Health and Environment Interrelationship: Challenges and Opportunities."
The winning entry will be brought to the Popcom national office to vie in the national contest to be held during the Popdev Week before the end of November this year
The writing competition was meant to draw different reactions from young people. It was also made to determine and check their knowledge about the population program of the government and its relation to the health and environment concerns of the community, said POPCOM Regional Director Vicente Molejona
