Aklan solon files bill dividing the province into two congressional districts
KALIBO, Aklan -- Aklan lone district Rep. Florencio Miraflores filed a bill that seeks to divide the province into two congressional districts.
Miraflores, in filing House Bill 2499, said there is a need for another district because Aklan is underrepresented at the House of Representatives.
He proposed that the two districts be named as Eastern District with nine municipalities under it and Western District to be composed of eight towns including Boracay Island.
"Seven years ago, the National Statistics Office (NSO) reported that the province's population stands at 451,314 with an annual population growth rate of 2.05 percent. Using this formula, it is projected that Aklan's population is currently 520,199. This means that Aklan is already qualified to be divided into two congressional districts with more than 250,000 inhabitants each," Miraflores said.
Miraflores added that Aklan's sustained development and the continuous migration to Kalibo and Boracay accounts for the province's increasing number of inhabitants. (PNA)
