Water sports activities in Boracay halted due to bad weather

BORACAY -- The Boracay Special Tourist Police Office (BSTPO) here has issued a warning to both foreign and local tourists to be cautious as the weather is not conducive for water sports. Big waves and strong winds had been affecting the island since Monday night.
BSTPO chief Senior Inspector Auxilio Dador said the advisory was made to prevent any sea accident and loss of lives. It is part of the police disaster preparedness plan though there is no typhoon signal raised in the island since last night.
Dador said they have already requested all the tour operators to stop any water-related activities meantime that the island is experiencing bad weather. All pump boat operators coming and going out of the island are likewise advised to be extra cautious. The advisory is channeled through the Philippine Coast Guard and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).
As of yesterday, there were no reports on cancellation of pump boat trips from the main island. Tourists’ influx continues in spite of the weather disturbance.
A weather update from PAG-ASA at 2:00 a.m Tuesday said Tropical Storm "MINA" was located based on land radar, satellite and surface data at 70 kms West of Basco, Batanes (20.5°N, 121.1°E) with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It is forecast to move Northeast at 15 kph. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression "LANDO" was estimated at 220 kms Northwest of Puerto Princesa City (11.5°N, 117.8°E) with maximum winds of 55 kph near the center and. It is forecast to move East Northeast at 19 kph.
Dador said the foreign tourists have heeded their request as they are also concerned of their safety.
As of Monday night and Tuesday morning, the island experienced power interruptions. The usual nightlife in the island is partly affected because of the strong winds. Owners of resorts and restaurants have to put shield on their properties in order to protect it from strong winds.
