LCP condemns military 'adventurism'
The League of Cities in the Philippines (LCP) condemns the military adventurism of former Scout Ranger Regiment Commander Brig. Danilo Lim and former Navy Lieutenant turned Senator Antonio Trillanes after they walked out from their court trial in Makati City and staged another destabilization plot against the government.
In a fax message, the league through its president Mayor Benhur Abalos denounces the "act of destabilization perpetrated by a faction of the Magdalo group against the duly constituted government as they expressed full support to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo." They still recognize the President's effort in leading the nation to economic recovery "Changes through extra legal means can not be tolerated," the league said.
The LCP statement added that the "political unrest would only plunge our nation once more into economic instability. We are on the road to development with the peso performing in its strongest and the stock market at its highest."
The same statement calls for Filipino people to rally behind the government and continue to uphold the rule of law.
In a text message, Mayor Jerry Treñas, a former president of LCP, said the league condemns the military adventurism of the soldiers. He added that the incident is isolated and is only meant to destabilize the government.
Lim and Trillanes marched to the Manila Peninsula Hotel where they still holed out as of presstime. An order to arrest Trillanes is already out after they walked out of the court. Trillanes was the head of the Magdalo soldiers in the short-lived Oakwood mutiny in 2004. While, Lim is being tried by a court martial for last year's attempt to grab power is testifying for Trillanes in the Makati trial.
Treñas urged the Ilonggos to remain calm and sober in spite of what is happening in Metro Manila. The attempt to throw the government will not "prosper" since the President is still enjoying much support from people, Treñas said.
