Dues for Liga election deferred
Roxas City -- All punong barangays may now join the election of Liga ng mga Barangay without the payment of Liga dues.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno has ordered for the deferment of payment of Liga dues as a requirement for punong barangays to participate in the said election.
"This is to ensure that every barangay is represented in the coming municipal and city liga chapter elections on December 11," Puno said.
Under the Liga ng mga Barangay Election Code of 2002, one of the requirements to participate in the Liga chapter elections which enables a bona fide participant to cast a vote and to be voted upon in any Liga chapter election at all levels is to show proof that said participant has been regularly remitting the required Liga dues to their respective levels.
Puno asked the DILG Regional Directors and field officers to temporarily defer the required proof of payment of Liga dues as a requirement under the Voting Credentials stated in the Liga Election Code, provided that the concerned Liga members shall execute a promissory note guaranteeing that the arrearages shall be paid within a reasonable time, but before the confirmation by the National Liga of their election.
December 29, 2007 will be the Liga chapter election for the provincial, metropolitan, highly urbanized and independent component cities chapters; and January 29, 2008, for the national chapter, Puno announced.
In Capiz, DILG Provincial Director Jenny Destua said that he has already instructed all his field officers in the 16 towns and Roxas City to disseminate said information to all barangay captains for them to actively participate in the upcoming election.
Destua revealed that everything is already set for the Liga elections and reiterated his call for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the election here.
He also appealed to individuals, political organizations and other political leaders not to interfere nor harass the would-be candidates. (PIA)
