Bayanihan performing here Jan. 24th
The Ilongggos will be in for a pre-Dinagyang festival treat with the coming here of the internationally-acclaimed Bayanihan dancers who will be performing on January 24th and 25th at the San Jose Auditorium in Jaro dsitrict.
The show will feature five major presentations including "The Voyage for Love, Peace, a loyal tale of love lost and regained," the original Bayanihan dance piece that won the Gold Temple Award for over-all excellence in dance, music, costumes and production at the 47th International Folklore Festival in Agrigento, Sicily in 2002.
Other productions include Earth Rhythms; Tribal Tapestry; Extramuros, beyond the walls and People Under the Sun.
Bayanihan, the national folk dance company of the country was founded in 1956 by Dr. Helena Benitez as the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group of the Philippine Women' s University. The following year, 1957, the group was formally organized as the Bayanihan Folk Arts Center with the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company as its performing arm. Since then, it has gone to major productions worldwide and has received numerous citations for its excellence and skill in dancing.
The Bayanihan show is brought to the city by the Iloilo City Task Force on Street Children, the Iloilo Juvenile Welfare Foundation, Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Quota International of Iloilo and the St. Louise de Marillac Educational System of the Daughters of Charity.
There will be matinee shows on January 24th and 25th at 10 AM and 2 PM respectively and a gala show on the 25th at 7 PM.
Proceeds from the concert will fund the various developmental projects of the sponsoring agencies. (PIO)
