Region's future writers gather in 2-day DepEd journ gab
Iloilo City played host to over a thousand elementary students of Western Visayas in a two-day gab on campus journalism.
A yearly activity initiated by the Department of Education (DepEd) here, all six provinces of the region were represented with delegates coming from both public and private elementary schools.
This year's theme, "Promoting consumers' rights through campus journalism," exposed the student-delegates to the basics of news writing, the art of feature writing and over-all basics involved in campus journalism.
Guest judges from the academe were called in to rank the articles and come up with winning pieces as choices were made from hundreds of submitted works.
Winners were chosen for best articles in news writing, feature writing and editorial. Sample works in cartooning and lay-outing were also judged following the on-the-spot contests conducted.
The 2008 Regional School Press Conference For Elementary was held at the Punta Villa Beach Resort in Arevalo District.
"It was good to see budding writers in our elementary students," Norwin dela Cruz, Editor of News Express said. "We see a lot of potential here and we can certainly expect the next writers from their generation."
Similar sentiments echoed by Rene Monteclaro, Station Manager of Radyo ng Bayan and veteran journalist Limuel Celebria.
"These student-delegates are very lucky to be part of this conference and for the exposure that they have here. It is certainly a great experience for them. Hat s off to the Department of Education," Monteclaro said.
"The submitted works of the students were very impressive. We see that the hard work of our teachers both in government schools and private institutions are paying off. We in Western Visayas have a lot of reasons to be proud of," Celebria for his part added.
