Intensified implementation of Iloilo's anti-smoking ordinance up
This city has started laying the ground works for full implementation of Regulation Ordinance No. 2006-150 otherwise known as "The Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance of Iloilo City."
City councilor Julienne Baronda, main proponent of the ordinance, said her committee is just waiting for the final listing of the board that will compose and lead the implementation of the local law spearheaded by the Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force (ICAST).
The implementing rules and regulations (IRR) called for by Regulation Ordinance No. 2006-150 was signed by City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas last February 7, 2007 yet, but the ICAST Board has not been completed.
Hopefully, the composition of the board will be completed before the end of February this year, Baronda said.
The law shall apply to all persons, establishments, public and private offices within the jurisdiction of Iloilo City for absolute ban on smoking tobacco and tobacco products such as cigarettes in schools, public building, public conveyances, government-owned vehicles, locations in which fire hazards are present, and within buildings of public and private hospitals, medical, dental and optical clinics, except in designated smoking areas.
Penalties for individual violators include a fine of P500 on first offense, P1,000 on second office and P5,000 on third and subsequent offenses.
Fines for erring establishments include P500 for first offense, P1,000 for second offense and P5,000 for third and subsequent violations with cancellation and revocation of business permit and license. (PNA)
