Iloilo Governor Niel D. Tupas, Sr. is extending financial assistance to the family of the two-year-old boy who has been in comatose due to the complications of the Cheiloplasty surgery he underwent during the USA Medical Mission conducted at the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Pototan, Iloilo last January 24 to February 3.
Tupas said he also directed Iloilo Provincial Health Officer Patricia Grace Trabado to closely monitor the condition of the boy and provide every possible support needed for his recovery.
Based on report, the two-year-old boy who is from the town of Mina had a cardiac arrest while the surgery was being performed. The medical mission team at first tried to revive him, but later on decided to transfer the boy to the Iloilo Doctor's Hospital in this city.
Iloilo Board Member Macario Napulan, who is the Iloilo Provincial Board Committee on Health chairman and a physician by profession, is reported to diagnose the boy under Glascow Coma Scale 3 which is the most critical stage.
The board member also believes there has been breach on the pre-operative procedure that could have established the need for cardio-pulmonary clearance on the patient before undergoing the surgery.
But Tupas said everything went well during the medical mission except for the case of the two-year-old boy. He said it was a very unfortunate incident and nobody wanted it to happen.
He said the medical mission team went out of its way to bring medical equipment and medical/surgical supplies such as anesthesia/ultra machines and cardiac monitor for the patients' use.
The medical mission was organized by Ilonggo couple Melvin and Jane Barrido to help their impoverished fellow Ilonggos avail of their much needed medical assistance. (PNA)
