WV among top 5 BESRA grant recipients
Western Visayas is among the top five recipients of the Basic Education Sector Reform Agenda (BESRA) funds for the implementation of a systematically improved nationwide basic education components.
The five regions which will receive the grant are Region IV-A with 499 elementary and secondary schools; Region III with 488, Region V with 463 recipients, Region 1 with 447 and Region VI with 436.
A total of Php230.5 million will be released by DepEd to selected 4000 elementary and 1,000 secondary schools nationwide for them to pursue their respective school improvement plan under the School-Based Management of the BESRA.
Each recipient school will be granted P46,100 to fund activities outlined in the school's annual implementation consolidated by schools division office.
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said the grant must be used for school-based capacity-building especially in English, Filipino, Science and Math, among others.
Further, the fund can also be used to reproduce classroom assessment tools, purchase of supplementary instructional materials and purchase/reproduction of training materials, wherein no single item shall cost more than P10,000.
Lapus said the recipient schools have met the following criteria:1) the school has a school improvement plan prepared in cooperation with the school's internal and external stake holders; 2) the school is addressing one or more problems involving poor student performance, high drop-out rate, and low completion rate; 3) the school has a school head either a principal or a head teacher; and, 4) it has a strong school-community partnership.
